The three factors that carry the rest

90

Intent match

The page answers what the searcher actually meant — the factor no tag can compensate for.

75

Topic coverage

Depth and completeness against what already ranks. Thin pages lose to thorough ones.

60

Structure

Title, headings, and internal links that let both users and crawlers navigate the answer.

Every on-page checklist item serves one of those three. A perfect title tag on a page that misanswers the query is a well-labelled wrong answer; exhaustive content with no heading structure is a great answer nobody can scan. Optimize in that order: intent first, coverage second, structure third, and only then the refinements.

The page-level checklist

  1. One search intent per page. Read the current top ten for your keyword — they define whether the query wants a guide, a list, a product, or a tool. Match the format or accept losing to it (keyword research explains intent).
  2. Title tag: the keyword, the promise, under ~60 characters. It is both a ranking input and your ad in the results.
  3. Meta description: not a ranking factor, but the click-through lever — how to write ones that earn clicks.
  4. Headings that answer sub-questions. H2s should read like the outline of the answer; assistants and featured snippets lift them directly.
  5. Internal links in and out. Link from the page to its supporting content and from your authoritative pages to it — the internal linking playbook.
  6. Images compressed, sized, and described image SEO is the most commonly skipped third of on-page work.
  7. Schema for what the page is — article, product, FAQ, local business (schema markup explained).

What to fix first across a whole site

Do first — high impact, many pages

  • Pages ranking 8–20 for money terms
  • Missing or duplicate title tags
  • Intent mismatches on commercial pages

Schedule — high impact, fewer pages

  • Content refresh on decayed pages
  • Internal link passes after each publish
  • Alt text on the image backlog

Quick wins — low effort

  • Truncated titles and descriptions
  • Missing schema on qualifying pages
  • Broken internal links

Deprioritise — low impact

  • Keyword-density tweaking
  • Rewriting pages that already rank #1–3
  • Exact-match-anchor internal linking
Rank findings by severity × pages affected × page importance — then work top-left first.

What on-page checkers actually check

An on-page analysis tool crawls a URL and scores the mechanical layer: tag presence and length, heading hierarchy, content depth, link counts, image attributes, canonical correctness, schema validity. That is genuinely useful — it catches the forgettable errors at scale — but the score is not the ranking. The tool cannot judge whether the content matches intent or deserves to outrank what is there. Read the score as “is the mechanical layer clean?” and keep the judgement work for yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What is on-page SEO optimization?
On-page SEO is the optimization of everything on the page itself: the title tag, headings, content quality and depth, internal links, images, URL, and structured data. It is the half of ranking you fully control — no budget, no outreach, no waiting on third parties — which is why it is where every SEO effort should start.
What are the most important on-page SEO factors?
In rough order of leverage: content that matches search intent and covers the topic properly; a title tag that says what the page is and earns the click; headings that structure the answer; internal links that pass authority and context; and image optimization. Everything else refines those five.
What is the difference between on-page and off-page SEO?
On-page SEO is what you do on your own pages — content, tags, structure, links between your pages. Off-page SEO is what happens elsewhere — backlinks, brand mentions, reviews. On-page determines what you can rank for; off-page largely determines how high against competition. You control the first completely and the second only indirectly.
How do I check my on-page SEO?
Use an on-page checker that crawls the URL and scores the elements: title and description presence and length, heading structure, content depth, image alt text, internal links, canonical, and schema. Then check the page against the actual search results for its keyword — the ranking pages define what intent looks like.
Is on-page SEO enough to rank?
For low-competition keywords, often yes — many long-tail queries are won on content and structure alone. For competitive terms, on-page work qualifies you and off-page authority separates you. The practical rule: perfect on-page is necessary everywhere and sufficient only where competition is weak.
